For a first Iron Blight run, prioritize the active objective, a checked weapon, one practical recovery item, and a clear exit—not every pickup in the room. The game makes information physical: ammunition is inspected manually, reloads take deliberate actions, and key tools share a limited grid with weapons and healing.

First 20 minutes checklist

Before you move onWhy it matters
Check the loaded state of your current weapon in a safe place.A manual reload is much safer before an encounter than during it.
Carry the named key or tool named by the current route.A required object can look optional until its matching gate or machine appears.
Leave one or two inventory cells open.A key item, card, or tool can arrive immediately after an interaction.
Make a recovery save before machinery, a puzzle, or a major area change.Recent patches have corrected route and save blockers; a pre-interaction save makes retesting possible.
Use crouching to reposition when a fight is avoidable.Patch 1.04 removed player footstep sounds while crouching.

Do not turn every pickup into a loadout

Iron Blight's inventory is a decision system, not just storage. Carry one firearm you have checked and can supply, then add a compact fallback only if it solves a different problem. A progression item has priority over a duplicate weapon, loose attachment, or ammunition type you cannot use soon.

When the grid is full, install a compatible attachment, store a weapon without ammunition, or leave an obviously optional item for a later return. Do not drop the current named key or tool simply because it has not been used in the next room. The inventory guide explains the backpack and grid trade-offs; the key-item checklist keeps the route tools in order.

Make combat create a route

Avoid spending a round only to make an optional room quieter. A shot can solve immediate danger but may also attract attention, and a close fight gives manual reloading less room. Look for an open door, a corner, cover, or a route back before starting the encounter.

On Patch 1.04, melee attacks use line-of-sight checks and crouching does not create footstep sound. Those changes reward careful positioning, but they are not an invulnerability rule. Use the enemy guide for confirmed behavior changes and the weapons guide for route order and carrying choices.

Use detailed pages only when you need the spoiler

Start with the full walkthrough for campaign order. Open St. Toma Dormitory, Prasnova, Workshop, or Police Station when you need an area hand-off. Puzzle pages give direct answers, so keep them closed until you want the solution.

For a challenge run, read difficulty and modes and the achievement guide before beginning. Patch 1.01 changed achievement awarding and the default Hardcore Sickness modifier; an old launch guide may give you the wrong setup.

If your objective does not advance

  1. Confirm the installed version in Steam; this wiki uses Patch 1.04 as its baseline.
  2. Read the current objective and inspect the exact named key item in your inventory.
  3. Reload a save from before the affected door, machine, or repair interaction.
  4. Compare the area with its detailed route page rather than a launch-week recording.
  5. If it still differs, record the map area, objective text, and game version for a reproducible report.

Verification note

This first-run guide was reviewed on September 6, 2026 against official Steam patch announcements through Patch 1.04 and the wiki's verified route content. It avoids unverified damage values, hidden locations, and alleged universal stealth rules.
