Iron Blight Inventory and Backpack Guide

Master the Iron Blight inventory grid with practical advice on backpacks, weapons, ammunition, healing, food, tools, magazines, and safe backtracking.

Iron Blight uses a limited, diegetic grid inventory, so the safest loadout is one primary weapon, one compact fallback, matching ammunition, a healing option, and the current progression tool. Do not fill every cell simply because a pickup is available. The next key, battery, or repair part can matter more than a second long gun.

Backpack upgrades ease the pressure: a Medium Backpack appears around 16:43 in St. Toma Dormitory, and a Large Backpack appears around 1:46:16 in Prasnova with the Workshop Alley Key. Both are high-priority pickups because they reduce forced backtracking and make the later multi-tool sequences easier to manage.

How the inventory changes survival

Every item competes for visible physical space rather than disappearing into separate unlimited categories. Weapons, magazines, loose ammunition, food, medical supplies, attachments, and route tools all occupy the same planning problem. A useful object can still be the wrong object for the next ten minutes.

The lack of a traditional HUD reinforces that system. You cannot rely on a permanent ammo number while deciding whether another magazine is worth the cells; inspect the weapon and carried magazines in safety. Information is part of the resource economy.

Carry one weapon you can reliably reload and one smaller fallback whose ammunition is actually available. Add one healing item, a modest food supply, the key or tool named by the current objective, and only the magazines that match those weapons. Leave at least one small region open for an unexpected progression pickup.

This is a framework, not a fixed build. The TOZ-34 may be valuable in the Dormitory's close corridors, while the OTs-48K suits a different sight line and consumes a larger shape. Change the primary weapon when the route and ammunition justify it rather than carrying both indefinitely.

Medium Backpack location

The Medium Backpack is found around 16:43 in St. Toma Dormitory, after the TOZ-34 and before the Hammer with TT-33 Laser Sight. It arrives early enough to shape the rest of the first area. Prioritize it over optional ammunition that can be collected after the grid expands.

Reorganize immediately in the safe pickup room. Place large rectangular weapons along an edge, group small consumables together, and reserve a flexible strip for the Hammer, Bolt Cutter, key, and Car Battery sequence that follows. A clean arrangement reduces the chance that free cells exist but cannot fit the shape of a tool.

Large Backpack location

The Large Backpack appears around 1:46:16 with the Workshop Alley Key. This point comes shortly before the OTs-20 Gnom Laser Sight, PP-91 Kedr Extended Mag, Punch Card, Blowtorch, Pump Gauge, Drive Belt, and Jerry Can. The expansion is therefore part of route preparation, not merely a completion collectible.

Collect or equip the backpack before deciding which nearby supplies to abandon. Keep the Workshop Alley Key and create room for at least two tools. The workshop sequence adds items faster than it consumes them, so entering with a completely filled Large Backpack still creates the same problem at a bigger scale.

How many weapons should you carry?

Two is a practical upper limit for most of a first run: one primary and one fallback. A third weapon is reasonable only after a backpack upgrade, when it covers a genuinely different role and you also have its ammunition. Three empty or redundant guns are worse than one checked firearm plus medicine and a route tool.

Use storage for collection rather than the active backpack. The all-weapons route proves that every named firearm can be obtained, but it does not require carrying all seven simultaneously. Review the weapon list and retrieve a specialized gun before the area where it helps.

Magazines and manual reloads

Iron Blight makes magazine state something you inspect. Build a habit of checking after combat, before opening an unknown door, and before leaving a safe storage point. A magazine that looks present is not the same as a verified full magazine.

Reloading is performed in deliberate stages, so inventory decisions affect time under pressure. Keep compatible magazines near their weapon in the grid, do not mix ammunition for stored guns into the active loadout, and finish the reload sequence before advancing. The PP-91 Kedr Extended Mag increases capacity but does not replace ammunition discipline.

Healing and food priorities

Carry enough recovery to survive one mistake, not every healing item found in the district. Excess medicine consumes room that could prevent the backtrack causing the next fight. Food and medical supplies both matter in the official game description, but the correct balance depends on current condition and difficulty.

Use damaged health as a reason to reassess the route, not automatically consume the largest item. If a safe room and stored supply are nearby, recover there and keep compact emergency healing for the next unfamiliar section. Higher difficulties or repeated sickness effects justify a larger reserve.

Key items always outrank optional loot

A named key, Battery, Circuit Board, Punch Card, Blowtorch, Pump Gauge, Drive Belt, or Jerry Can opens progress. A weapon attachment improves a tool you may not even be carrying. When both cannot fit, take the progression object, remember the optional pickup, and return after the next backpack or storage opportunity.

Install a compatible attachment as soon as it is safe. The developer-confirmed method is to open the weapon interface and click its green attachment dot; the button is gray if the part is unavailable or incompatible. Successful installation removes the need to carry the loose modification separately.

How to organize the grid

Put the largest fixed shapes along the outer edge and avoid splitting the center into unusable single cells. Group magazines with their weapon, keep small consumables in a compact block, and leave one regular strip for tools whose shape you have not seen. Repack at a safe point rather than making tiny adjustments after every pickup.

The objective is not visual perfection. A slightly untidy grid with accessible healing and a free tool slot is better than a dense arrangement that requires a full puzzle whenever combat ends. Consistent placement also helps you notice a missing magazine or key without relying on a HUD.

What to store or leave behind

Store ammunition for weapons you are not carrying, duplicate recovery items beyond your planned reserve, unused guns, and late attachments whose compatible weapon is safely nearby. Keep route tools until their matching objective has completed and the map has moved on. Avoid dropping a generic key solely because its label resembles an earlier one.

Loose optional pickups can remain for a controlled return if the area is safe. Do not make a long detour through respawned or unsettled enemies for a small supply that merely replaces the resources spent reaching it. Inventory value includes the danger of retrieval.

Inventory mistakes that waste resources

The first mistake is carrying incompatible ammunition “just in case.” The second is adding every new weapon without retiring an old one. The third is reaching a machine with no space for its output, then reorganizing while exposed.

Another mistake is treating manual reloads like a conventional instant action. Verify the weapon is ready before closing the inventory or crossing a threshold. Patch notes have fixed some save-state and item issues, but an unchecked empty magazine is a planning error, not a software bug.

Before entering Prasnova's workshop

Bring one ready firearm, its ammunition, one healing option, and the Workshop Alley Key. Leave at least two tool-sized spaces if possible. The upcoming order includes the Punch Card, Blowtorch, Pump Gauge, Drive Belt, and Jerry Can, with optional attachments mixed into the same stretch.

Make a separate save before operating the Punch Card machine or boat-repair equipment. Patches 1.01 and 1.02 addressed progression failures in those sequences, and a pre-interaction save remains useful if a current-version edge case appears.

Verified source

Backpack order and surrounding pickups were checked against the supplied complete all-weapons recording on August 31, 2026. System behavior is based on the official Steam description, which confirms the diegetic grid inventory, scarce resources, no-HUD presentation, manual magazine checks, and deliberate reloading.
